ふたつをならべる Side by side

〜こと

the act of ~

Koto turns an action or event into a thing.
Nobody needs to have said it. It attaches directly to the action.

Example

日本語にほんごはなすことが きです。

行動こうどうそのものが き。

〜ということ

the fact that ~, meaning that ~

To iu koto packages information: what someone said, heard, or wrote.
You also use it when you restate something or sum up what it means.

Example

明日あしたやすみだということを きました。

だれかからいた 情報じょうほう

ポイント Point

こと 行動こうどうを「もの」にする
ということ 情報じょうほうを「もの」にする

このふたつは、 丁寧ていねいさのちがいではありません。 言葉ことばとおっているかおおきくちがいます。

「こと」は、行動こうどう直接ちょくせつつきます。 あいだなにはいりません。

「ということ」は、あいだ言葉ことば一枚いちまい はいります。 だれかがった、または 自分じぶんがまとめた 「情報じょうほう」につきます。

English uses “that” for both: “I like that I can speak Japanese” and “I heard that tomorrow is a holiday.” Japanese splits them. Koto is for the action; to iu koto is for the information about it.

注意ちゅうい Note

「ということ」が使つかえないかたち

つぎかたちは、 いつも「こと」です。 行動こうどうはなしだからです。

  • 日本語にほんごはなすということができます
  • 日本語にほんごはなすことができます
  • 京都きょうとったということがあります
  • 京都きょうとったことがあります

With ~koto ga dekimasu (ability) and ~koto ga arimasu (experience), only koto works. These describe what you do, not information about it.

「ということは」ぶんあたまくと、 「つまり」という意味いみになります。 会話かいわでとてもよく 使つかいます。

A:「今日きょう仕事しごとわりません。」
B:「ということは今日きょうられないんですね。」

To iu koto wa ~ at the start of a sentence works like “So that means ~.” You are not reporting a new fact; you are drawing a conclusion from what was just said.
