I know / I understand — but that’s not quite the difference

The deciding question

Was the answer already in your head, or are you working it out right now?

Worked out here and now → wakarimasu

Where the information lives

いま かれたa question, right now かんがえるwork it out かります

Shitte iru is about storage: a fact, a name, a number, a piece of news that entered your head at some point before now. Wakaru is about the moment: you are handed a question, you think, and an answer comes out (or doesn’t). English “know” covers both, which is why the line feels invisible — until you have to say “I don’t know” and the two Japanese words suddenly split.

Side by side

っています

I have that information

Use it for facts that are already in your head.
You did not have to think — you just had it.

Example

I can work it out

Use it when the answer is produced on the spot.
The question comes first; the answer comes after you think.

When you cannot answer

  • 1

I thought about it, and no answer came. The question reached me.

  • 2

That information was never in my head to begin with — so there was nothing to think about. But for a question you could have thought about, it can sound like “not my problem.”

  • 3

The negative of shitte imasu is shirimasen, not shitte imasen. Wakarimasu / wakarimasen is regular.

Not “which is politer” — “did the question reach my head, or was the information never there.”

Answers and why

Q1

You moved to this town last week. A stranger stops you on the street and asks where the post office is. You cannot answer.

Show the answer

The stranger handed you a question, and you tried to work it out. Nothing came — that is wakarimasen.

Shirimasen says the information was never yours to begin with. Grammatically fine, but to a person asking for help it lands as “not my business.”

かりません = I thought, and I can’t tell.
りません = I don’t have that information.

Q2

You are at work. A Japanese coworker asks you, “Do you know Yamada-san from the Osaka office?” You have never met or heard of this person.

Show the answer

You have never met this person, and the name is new to you. There is nothing to work out — the information was simply never in your head. That is shirimasen.

Wakarimasen is not wrong here, but it says something else: “Which Yamada? I can’t tell.” Your coworker hears you sorting through people you might know — not that the name is new to you. The sentence works; what you meant does not arrive.

Q1 and Q2 point in opposite directions on purpose. In Q1 the question reached your head and nothing came back. In Q2 it was never there to begin with.
